Resilience and leadership programs for Ukrainian youth affected by war

Witer e.V. is a youth work association building safe, creative spaces where young people reconnect, act, and grow — through outdoor camps, alumni support, and youth leadership pathways.

International exchanges

Non-formal education and cultural exchange projects.

Integration & local youth work

Support and opportunities for refugee youth in Germany.

ZGRAYA (flagship)

Witer’s flagship program: a nature-based tent camp in Western Ukraine combined with year-round alumni support and youth leadership training. We create a safe, structured environment where young people reconnect with peers, process experience through art, and build agency for the future.

How it works (3 tiers)

  • Tier 1: Camp (10 days) — creative workshops + guided reflection + peer bonding

  • Tier 2: Alumni continuity — annual alumni gathering + structured online community

  • Tier 3: Youth leadership — Emissaries training + youth-led local actions

  • "I can confidently say that “ZGRAYA” has changed my life and takes a special place in my heart. I met these people during a disturbing time in my life. Back then, I was afraid of enrolling to the university, uncertain about my communication and socialization skills... and much more... Looking back, today it sounds so not important."

    — Lidiia, young leader

  • "When I was coming back home, I felt like I could do anything; it seemed as if the two train tickets had given me the strength and the ability to do the things for which I am loved."

    — Keer, participant

  • "There are events in life that stay with you for life, that shape your worldview, and, based on this, your reality - all this is about “ZGRAYA”. The wonderful atmosphere, new friends, various activities, and incredible nature around conquer the children's hearts and make them hungry for new meetings."

Past Projects

Why Witer?

In 1957, Ukrainian writer Ivan Bahrianyi published Wild Wind in Munich — a story of youth in times of crisis. We carry that spirit forward: the wind as resilience, movement, and renewal. That’s why we are Witer (“wind” in Ukrainian).

  • In 1957, Ukrainian writer Ivan Bahrianyi published Wild Wind in Munich — a novel about youth growing up in turbulent times. The wind in his story was not only destruction. It was movement, force, change, and survival.

We chose the name Witer (wind in Ukrainian) because we believe young people growing up in crisis do not need to be sheltered from reality — they need safe spaces where they can gather strength within it.

    The wind represents:

    • Resilience in instability

    • Movement in times of stagnation

    • Energy that cannot be contained

    • The collective force created when individuals come together

Witer is not about protection from the storm. It is about learning to stand in it — together.

We work at the intersection of crisis and growth. And we believe that even in the most difficult circumstances, youth deserve structured opportunities to connect, create, and lead.

  • We are a grassroots organization — but our work is structured.

    Our approach combines:

    1. Safe Physical Spaces

We create environments where young people can temporarily step out of instability and reconnect with themselves and others. Nature, physical presence, and shared living are key elements of our method.

    2. Non-Formal Education

We use artistic expression, guided reflection, dialogue formats, and peer exchange to help youth process experience and develop emotional resilience.

    3. Long-Term Continuity

Our programs do not end when the event ends. Through alumni gatherings, online peer spaces, and leadership tracks, participants remain connected and supported.

    4. Youth Leadership

Former participants become emissaries, facilitators, and multipliers. We invest in agency, not dependency.

    5. Professional Accountability

Although we are grassroots, we operate with:

    • Clear budgets

    • Defined roles

    • Structured preparation

    • Impact documentation

    • Transparent reporting
